John-Paul Lay
Having completed NCEA Level 3 in 2020, John-Paul is very familiar with the curriculum and its demands on students. John-Paul received the award for New Zealand’s top scholar in Chemistry for 2020, and in addition won 7 other NZQA scholarships including Outstanding scholarships in English and Media Studies, and scholarship in calculus, classical studies, history, physics, and statistics. He was one of 12 recipients of the NZQA Premier Awards recognising the very top Yr 13 students in New Zealand. John-Paul was Proxime Accessit of Christ’s College, Canterbury.
John-Paul is currently completing an honours year in Mathematics at the University of Auckland having graduated from the University of Canterbury with a BSc in Physics and Mathematics and BE (Hons) in Electrical Engineering in 2023 (a course to which he gained direct entry in 2021). He is a recipient of the UC Academic Excellence (Hiranga) Scholarship, UC Emerging Leaders (Horomata) Scholarship, UC Engineering Top Scholars Award, and AIMS scholarship.
A keen debater, football player and musician, J-P is also a bit of a jazz aficionado and aspires to one day match Roger Ebert with his ever-growing list of film reviews.
